Las zonas rurales de cota baja, dieron paso a los elevados prados alpinos donde las vacas pastaban impasibles al paso del hombre. Atrás quedaban las granjas y el reducto mas arraigado de esta tierra, resistiendo a una Suiza mas tecnológica y avanzada. Estas praderas de montaña siguen siendo el testigo mas fiel a una gente distinta a la de ciudad, adaptados a un medio de vida tan antiguo como duro a la vez. Nos encontramos en los Grisones, el canton con la densidad de población mas baja del país, pero por contra con la mayor superficie con diferencia al resto. Ciertamente, aqui se respira un aire mas tranquilo y espacioso, una serenidad a cierta altura que solo se ve afectada por los cencerros del ganao y el incesante ruido del agua mas purificada del planeta, que circula por los ríos y barrancos. Y como no podía ser de otra forma, faltaba la presencia en este blog, de uno de los cañones mas completos, deportivos, técnicos, interesantes y apasionantes de todo un país, Aua dil Mer.
 

Nuestra ruta comienza desde el lago de Pigniu, un enclave único en medio de un escenario alpino. Abandonamos el asfalto y el hormigón que construye la enorme presa que retiene las aguas de el cañon que nos ocupa, para adentrarnos en una estampa montañosa y escarpada, tan perfecta y bella que uno se siente en el paraíso. La misma sensación que nos envuelve año tras año, cada vez que pisamos estas montañas, abrigados contra el frio cortante que caracteriza esta tierra. El cosquilleo en el estomago cuando se nos va la mirada a las imponentes cascadas en el horizonte, desde fuera, meandros y colectores glaciares seccionados con la precisión de el mejor cirugano del mundo, la naturaleza. Desde dentro todo lo contrario, cauces totalmente asimétricos y cargados con miles de formas.
 

 

Aua dil Mer es un cañon extraordinario. Después de Segnes, para mi gusto es el segundo mejor de Suiza oriental. No llega a ser perfecto por los cortos tramos abiertos que le dan un respiro entre secciónes, pero a pesar de que no se viva una sensación comprometida al cien por cien, el descenso es muy intenso desde el comienzo hasta el final. Se puede diferenciar una primera parte estrecha y tremendamente esculpida con una serie de rapeles de todo tipo, una segunda parte mas abierta pero con cascadas mas altas y en ocasiones técnicas, aquí se encuentra la gran cascada del descenso de unos 130 metros en total, fraccionanda en tres. Y una ultima parte otra vez formada, no tan estética como la primera, pero con rapeles por lo activo, pozas profundas y un sifón. El recorrido total del descenso es de alta calidad, muy atlético y penetrante.

En el cañon se viven momentos álgidos, compenetrando un potente caudal con una formación sinuosa y repleta de formas heterogéneas, estructuras psicodélicas y ameandradas que solo las dan estos singulares cañones glaciares. En nuestro caso, cogimos unas condiciones turísticas, tanto con la meteo y el nivel de agua, que en contadas ocasiones se disfruta este cañon de esta forma. La versión "sufrida" es la que impone el cañon normalmente siendo un recorrido exigente en todos los aspectos. El recorrido integral tiene una infinidad de rapeles, hay que prestar atención al horario y la evaluación del caudal, ya que todo se puede complicar mucho y a mayor recorrido, mayor será el tiempo en condiciones adversas. Hay varios testimonios de equipos muy experimentados que tuvieron que abortar el descenso sin acabarlo por infortunadas circunstancias. Aua dil Mer forma parte de los cañones de elite y uno de los mejores descensos que existen en nuestro continente.

The low-lying rural areas gave way to the high alpine meadows where the cows grazed impassively as the man passed by. Back were the farms and the strongest redoubt of this land, resisting a more technological and advanced Switzerland. These mountain meadows continue to be the most faithful witness to others people different to the city, adapted to a way of life as old as it is hard at the same time. We are in Graubünden, the canton with the lowest population density in the country, but by contrast with the largest area with difference to the rest. Certainly, here you can breathe a more calm and spacious air, a serenity at a certain height that is only affected by the cowbells of the cattle and the incessant noise of the most purified water on the planet, which flows through the rivers and canyons. And how could it be otherwise, was missing the presence in this blog, one of the most complete, sporting, technical, interesting and exciting canyons of a whole country, Aua dil Mer.

Our route starts from Lake Pigniu, a unique enclave in the middle of an alpine scenery. We leave the asphalt and concret that builds the huge dam that holds the waters of the canyon that occupies us, to enter in a mountain steep, so perfect and beautiful that one feels in Paradise. The same feeling that surrounds us year after year, every time we tread these mountains, dressed and warm against the intense cold that characterizes this land. The tingling in the stomach when we look at the imposing waterfalls on the horizon, from outside, meanders and glacial colectors sectioned with the precision of the best surgeon in the world, nature. From the inside, on the contrary, totally asymmetric channels loaded with thousands of shapes.

Aua dil Mer is an extraordinary canyon. After Segnes, for my taste it is the second best of the whole Eastern Switzerland. It does not become perfect because of the short open stretches that give it a break between sections, but despite the fact that there is not a 100% of commitment, the descent is very intense from the beginning to the end. You can differentiate a narrow and tremendously sculpted first part with a series of rappels of all kinds, a second part more open but with higher cascades and sometimes technical, here is the great waterfall of the descent of about 130 meters in total, fractioned in three. And a last part again formed, not as aesthetic as the first, but with rappels in the active, deep pools and a siphon. The total descent is of high quality, very athletic and penetrating.

In the canyon there are sharp moments, permeating a powerful flow with a sinuous formation and full of heterogeneous forms, psychedelic structures that are only given by these unique glacial canyons. In our case, we caught a tourist conditions, both with the meteo and the water level, that in rare occasions this canyon is enjoyed in this way. The "suffered" version is the one that imposes normally the canyon being a demanding route in all aspects. The integral route has an infinity of rappels, we must pay attention to the schedules and the evaluation of the flow, since everything can be much more complicated and the longer the route, the greater the time in adverse conditions. There are several testimonies from very experienced teams that had to abort the descent without finishing it due to unfortunate circumstances. Aua dil Mer is part of the elite canyons and one of the best descents that exist in our continent.
